You’ll know it’s time to clean your sewer or drain because it’ll be clogged up. Common signs of a clogged drain or sewer line include gurgling sounds, water back-ups or water pooling in your toilet, or smells of raw sewage coming from your property’s drains. Most experts say you should get your sewer cleaning on an “as-needed” basis, meaning there isn’t time period or limit between cleanings. Also, if you know your sewer lines are more than 40 years old, it’s probably a good idea to get them inspected.
Here are a few of the different types of drain and sewer cleaning services most plumbing companies provide:
Video Sewer Inspection
This form of drain cleaning is one of many that Acadian Plumbing specializes in. Small cameras are mounted on cables or flexible push rods that professionally trained plumbing technicians insert through the clogged pipe. From there, the cameras are able to detect any obstructions in the sewer line and fix them as necessary.
Video inspections can also any identify plumbing issues such as pipe cracks, misaligned pipes, corroded pipes, grease build-up, leaks and obstructions. Plumbing technicians can determine the condition of the pipe with this method and attend to any existing or potential problems.
At Acadian Plumbing, our cameras can inspect pipelines ranging from 2 inches to 36 inches in diameter, and all video and image data are stored on a flash drive. A copy of that flash drive is always made available to our customers!
Underground Line Detection
Underground line detection is a sewer line repair method that drain technicians use during a cleaning service. Technicians utilize advanced detection tools that electronically detect a property’s underground sewer lines. The detectors usually have something called an inductive signal transmission system, which shows if an underground line is present on an LCD display.
From there, technicians can find the best course of action for clearing out your drain!
Drain snaking, also known as drain cabling, is one of the most commonly used methods plumbing experts use when cleaning drains or sewers. Basically, a long cord with a coiled “snake” piece called an auger is inserted entirely through the sewer system. When it comes into contact with a clog in the pipes, it drills through the found clog.
This method can clean clogs that have already formed, though it can’t get rid of the waste that’s stuck to the walls of the pipe. It can only break up the clogs, not completely remove them.
This type of sewer cleaning can be done on your own; however, it’s highly recommended to get a professional who knows exactly what they’re doing.
Hydro Jetting is another common type of drain cleaning that sprays a high-pressure stream of water down the clogged sewer pipe. Hydro Jetting systems normally spray about 4,000 pounds per square inch, completely and effectively removing all waste from the pipes.
For residential properties, this method can remove sand, silt, hair and more. For commercial properties, this type of cleaning can remove substances like grease and food particle build-up.
This method is highly encouraged for preventing future clogs because it completely eliminates built-up waste due to the high pressure of the water, making it more difficult for future clogging to happen.
Only trained professionals should perform Hydro Jetting, as the high pressure of the water could damage lines that aren’t properly inspected first.
Lenzyme is a type of drain and sewer cleaning that uses harmless natural enzymes to break down the clog inside of the pipe. This is a less common way than Hydro Jetting and Drain Snaking to eliminate any drainage found in your property’s pipelines.
Professional plumbers might utilize this method if a tree root has broken and entered one of your property’s plumbing pipes. This issue is more common than you’d think, and the risky process involves highly skilled plumbing technicians.
Basically, the technician will remove the tree roots in a way that keeps the sewer pipes in place while also removing any obstructions from them.
This more specific tree removal method includes a drill-like machine that will wrap and collect any of the tree roots that have made their way into the pipe. After the machine is pulled from the pipe, the tree roots come out with it and water in your pipeline has the ability to flow efficiently again.
